Transform yourself.

Before you can make a transformation happen, though, you need to be clear which transformation you’d like to create. You started your business because you wanted to make a change. You had a dream of more.

More money.

More independence.

More recognition.

Where did that dream go? Have you come close to achieving it? Has the dream changed to something else?

think of your dream as the primary aim of your business.

The point of your business is to serve the other parts of your life, not vice-versa. What is the life you want to lead? How will your business serve that?

The long-term goal you come up with will only be your goal for the next five months. It’s not set in stone. Anytime during Mycelium, after where you've gone, you may have alter or completely change your goal (the goal, after all, is change). Some thoughts:

  • Writing down a goal doesn’t make it less likely to occur. 

  • Writing down a goal doesn’t make it hurt more when you don’t reach it.

  • Sharing a goal with a trusted circle isn’t humiliating.

PART 1: Create three different 5 year goals using the Odyssey Plan from Stanford University’s most popular course, Designing Your Life. Come to your first session ready to discuss the three goals, and which one excites you most.

PART 2: During the first session you’ll one of the goals to create a plan for the next five years. That will become your primary aim for your business and where all of your learning with Mycelium will be targeted towards. To understand goal setting, watch this video of Zig Ziglar’s method here. Your format of the goal for this project will match the format of the 7 steps. The seven steps will become your strategic objectives. They will be a SMART goal as well. Because this is a direct and clear process, you’ll be challenged to:

  1. describe the primary aim that you care about.

  2. hypothesize the strategic objectives that will get you there.

If your goal doesn’t make you a little uncomfortable, it’s probably not big enough to you. If you don’t know the strategic objectives that will help you achieve your goal, that’s OK. That’s what we’ll work on.

This method is pretty structured. It's good to learn the whole entire process first, and then you can scale back once you've incorporated a goal-mindset into your daily life. But doing the whole process for a while will help build your muscles.

ACTION: Read the materials linked to above. Before session 1, create your three 5-year plans. In person, we’ll talk them through. Are the goals worthy of you? Are they unrealistic, designed to give you a place to hide?

The most common initial approach is to pick goals that are:

- Vague

- Grandiose, or

- Trivial

These are all variations on hiding. If a goal feels safely small or safely ridiculous, it’s mostly safe and not much of a goal at all.

After the session, use the Ziglar Seven Steps of Goal Setting process to break your primary aim into strategic objectives, and describe the when, and the what, and the who. Publish it on your blog.

Think about these prompts:

  • If I think about how I set my priorities....

  • If I want to have a more effective business...

  • If I look at how I spend my time...

  • If I commit myself to raising my standard of living...

  • If I approach my work as an opportunity for self development…

  • If I take full responsibility for my choices and actions...
